L-carnitine is a naturally occurring compound of the essential amino acids methionine and lysine. L-carnitine plays a crucial role in transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are metabolized for energy production. Therefore, L-carnitine is of great importance for the breakdown of fat as fuel for muscles.
Although L-carnitine can be produced by the body, it must also be obtained through food. Since L-carnitine is primarily found in red meat, vegetarians and vegans are more likely to suffer from L-carnitine deficiency. Furthermore, the body's production of L-carnitine decreases with age.
