In addition to serving as a protective barrier, mucous membranes also serve to transport molecules. They protect organs from dehydration and are important for nutrient absorption. The structure of the mucous membrane depends on the function of the respective organ.

Mucous membranes are naturally colonized by many bacteria and other microorganisms. This colonization is essential for intact mucous membrane function. Inappropriate colonization, chronic stress, or various pollutants can impair mucous membrane function. To keep mucous membranes healthy and strengthen their function, a balanced diet, adequate fluid intake, and an optimal supply of micronutrients are particularly important. Vitamin A , biotin (vitamin B7), niacin (vitamin B3), and riboflavin (vitamin B2) contribute particularly to maintaining healthy mucous membranes.
