Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid)

Abbreviated ALA. A triunsaturated essential fatty acid belonging to the omega-3 fatty acid group. Important for the synthesis of the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Replacing saturated fatty acids with monounsaturated and/or polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diet contributes to maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels.
