Citrate

Citrate

Citrates play an important role in many metabolic processes. They are a central component of the citric acid cycle in the mitochondria (energy production) and bones. Bones are the main storage site for citrates. Citrates also play an important role in acid-base balance. They help cells deacidify intracellularly by breaking them down into carbonates, which also contribute to deacidification. Orally ingested citrates are broken down particularly by the liver and kidney cells, supporting these organs in acid neutralization.
